THE ROCKING RAPE

August,9 , 2024. Quit India Movement Day was celebrated all over India so also in Kolkata. We dearly remember the day as ultimatum was given to the Britishers to free India. After the fanfare throughout the day, the city of joy reclined to rest. At the stroke of the midnight bell, a deep depression arose in the Bay of Bengal. Quickly it took the form of a cyclone and the eye of the storm was Radha Gobind Kar hospital. A century old medical college was ravaged completely by the land fall of rape and murder storm.

A girl in the prime of her youth was doing intern after completing her medical degree. She was on duty continuously for thirty six hours. Being tired, she decided to take rest inside the seminar hall without knowing that this rest is going to be her eternal rest. What happened there is known to everybody. By repeating the same story again and again we are raping her soul for innumerable times. So here the point of contention is not the rape but the degeneration and degradation of the socio-political ethics.

Rape is a crime and whoever has done that is a criminal and should be dealt according to the law of the land. But what happened at Kolkata is beyond the comprehension of any civilized person. Why the government machineries were interested to protect the culprits? Why the ruling political party vandalized the crime spot to wash out the evidence? Is the man who has so far have been apprehended by the state police so important that the entire machineries acted at haste to save him? These questions and doubt will remain in the mind of the people so long the truth has not come out.

Sensing a bigger conspiracy in the entire episode, there was student protest not only in the R G Kar medical college but also in the entire state. The medical students of the entire country showed their solidarity and observed bandh and protest. The apex court took suo mutto cognizance of the matter and order for CBI inquiry which was welcome by one and all as there was trust deficit for the government of West Bengal. As the evident site was vandalized and evidences were washed out, the apex inquiry institution is also finding itself in great difficulties to collate evidences and to come to a conclusion.

The only accused apprehended so far is Sanjay Roy, who initially admitted the crime but later declined the statement saying the admission was out of fear to the police. During the poligraphy test the same thing has also came out. It is a fact that in that fateful night he has gone to the seminar room, but the brutal murder had taken place before his arrival there. The way the rape and murder has been committed, it can’t be believed that was the handiwork of one person. Definitely more than one has been involved in that gruesome act. Now it is the responsibility of the CBI to find out the culprits.

In the mean time Dr. Sandip Ghose the ill famed Principal of R G Kar hospital has been arrested by CBI in corruption charges. But it is yet to be proved his involvement in this heinous act. It is a fact that truth will come out definitely, may be sooner or later. But before that it is posing a lot of questions against our politics, politicians and system. After the incident, when Dr.Ghose resigned, why the ruling party took so much of interest and within twelve hours of his resignation, appointed him as Principal in another college ? Was he so indispensible? From the act of the government, it is clearly visible that Dr.Ghose had a great clout in the government and administration. Not only that, the government might be doing some unholy act through him so that the government machineries showed so much favour to him and even orchestrated a midnight drama by their goons to erase the evidences .Adding fuel to the fire of suspicion, the Chief Minister of West Bengal went in a rally to protest. This protest can be considered as the greatest joke of the century because the all in one like health, home and chief minister, the Chief Minister preferred to protest against herself and her failure.

Seeing the activities and support of the government not only in West Bengal but also in some other states, we the common citizens are bound to believe that where there is a high profile rape and murder, in some way or other the power centre has connivance to it. They will make vociferous effort not to give justice to the victim but to protect the culprits. So long this sort of political patronage is not over, so many Nirbhaya, Abhaya cases are bound to happen. Let’s see one Nirbhaya raked the throne of Delhi, can Abhaya  do the same in Bengal.
